HOUGHTON - Two things are known for certain about Houghton's next city manager: Whomever it is will be a first-time city manager and a Michigan Technological University graduate.
Those traits bind all three finalists, City Manager Scott MacInnes said Thursday.
The three names will be announced at a meeting on Dec. 4. Interviews will be conducted on Dec. 11.

Houghton City Manager Scott MacInnes is shown during the Oct. 9 city council meeting. At that meeting, MacInnes, who has been with the city since the 1970s, said he will step down from his position in February but remain with the city in some capacity through the end of 2014.
The council will then vote on a final choice at its Dec. 18 meeting.
"That's the plan - do the interview, send it back to the personnel subcommittee, and then have them make a recommendation on the 18th," MacInnes said.
The three candidates were culled from an initial field of 20. Two of the candidates are local, while one is from New Mexico, MacInnes said.
MacInnes announced in October he will step down from his position in February, remaining with the city in an advisory role through the end of 2014.
MacInnes said whomever his successor is, that person will do a good job.
"We've got three very good candidates," he said.
