Vina M. Walitalo

BOSTON LOCATION - Vina M. Walitalo, 95, a former resident of Boston Location, passed away Friday evening, November 29, 2013, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock where she had been a resident patient since July of 2006.

She was born on November 2, 1918, in Tamarack, a daughter of the late Alexander and Lempi (Kestila) Harju. As a child, she moved to Arcadian Location where she attended the Arcadian and Dollar Bay Schools.

She also resided in Minneapolis and Detroit for a short time.

On June 30, 1951, she was united in marriage to Herman "Matt" Walitalo. The couple first resided in Boston Location then moved to Coos Bay, Ore., for work reasons. In 1980, they returned to Boston Location for retirement. Vina remained in Boston Location until becoming a patient at Our Lady of Mercy Convalescent Home in Hubbell and the Houghton County Medical Care Facility. On April 24, 2006, Matt preceded Vina in death.

Also preceding her in death were 11 brothers and sisters.

Surviving are her brother, Roy Harju of Arcadian Location; and numerous nieces and cousins.

Funeral services for Vina will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 4, 2013, in the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Hancock with Rev. Kenneth Toth to officiate. Spring burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock.

Friends may call on Wednesday, December 4, 2013, from 10 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home.
