The Daily Mining Gazette

L'ANSE - A 19-year-old woman from South Range died as a result of injuries she sustained in an automobile accident near L'Anse Tuesday.

The Baraga County Sheriff's Office reported the accident occurred at about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday on U.S. 41, about three miles south of L'Anse.

Deputies said a vehicle driven by Brittany Nicholas, 19, of South Range, was northbound on U.S. 41 and lost control on the icy road striking a southbound vehicle driven by 64-year-old Diane Risku of Watton.

Both drivers were taken by Bay Ambulance to Baraga County Memorial Hospital. While Risku was treated and released, Nicholas was transferred to Marquette General Hospital.

Her death was confirmed Thursday by the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.

Nicholas was a 2012 graduate of Jeffers High School and was attending Northern Michigan University. A complete obituary is on page 2A.

Sheriff's Deputies were assisted at the scene by Keweenaw Bay Tribal Police and the L'Anse Fire and Rescue's Jaws of Life.
