HANCOCK - Dorothy Marie Manderfield, 89, of Hancock, passed away on Tuesday morning, December 10, 2013, at Portage Health in Hancock.
She was born in Baltic, on March 18, 1924. She graduated from Adams Township Schools in 1941. On July 16, 1949, she was united in marriage to John L. "Jack" Manderfield at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Atlantic Mine. Together they raised a family of seven children, and they owned and operated the Hancock Hardware Store in Hancock.
Dorothy was an active member of the Church of the Resurrection in Hancock. In 1984 she was ordained by Bishop Garland to serve as a lay minister. Her Catholic faith and love of God saw her through many triumphs and trails during her lifetime. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Julia (Gagne) Charles; a brother, Walter Charles; and her sister, Clarice Penegor.
She is survived by her children, John C. Manderfield of Hancock, Sarah Beth (Dan) Foco of Jackson, Mich., Stephen (Jhudy) Manderfield of Kuwait, Mark (Catherine) Manderfield of Hancock, Mary Kay (Mark) Qualseth of New Hope, Minn., Jane Manderfield of Atlantic Mine and Anne (Bob) Brunet of Hancock; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a special sister-in-law, Virginia Sullivan of Duluth, Minn.; and by many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday in the Church of the Resurrection in Hancock with Rev. Fr. Corbin Eddy and Rev. Fr. William Ssozi to con-celebrate. Interment will be in the spring at Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton.
Friends may call at the church on Friday from 6 until 8 p.m. and for an hour before the mass on Saturday morning in the church. There will be a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in the church.
Memorials in lieu of flowers may be directed to St. Vincent DePaul Society, 204 W. Quincy St., Hancock, MI 49930 or to Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly, 527 Hancock Ave., Hancock, MI 49930 in the name of Dorothy Manderfield.
