Marquette strong at swim triangular

The Daily Mining Gazette

HOUGHTON - The Houghton girls finished second and boys third in a triangular swim meet with Marquette and Sault Ste. Marie Saturday.

Marquette was best on both sides. The Redettes had 144 points to Houghton's 118 and Sault's 67.

On the boys' side, Marquette had 139, Sault 107 and Houghton 77.

"The Marquette girls were very impressive today, we just did not have the swims to match them. I hope this provides some motivation for the girls to step up their training and focus. I did feel that Christine Shonnard and Annika Wheeler had solid meets, Christine even posted some lifetime best times," Houghton coach Roger Woods said.

There were only two wins for the Houghton girls on the day, the first from Lauren Jackson in diving with 133.90 points. The other came from Samantha Verran, Sophie Witting, Shonnard and Colleen Toorongian in the 200 freestyle relay.

The Marquette boys won every event but diving, which was taken by the Sault.

Drew Meyer grabbed a pair of seconds in the 100 fly and 500 free.

"The boys' team is starting to show more depth behind Drew and Vladi (Kotov) even though the scores don't really reflect it yet. If the improvements continue we should have a solid core of boys going into the new year," Woods said.
