NOVI, Mich. - Raski, Edith E. (Kaarlela), of Novi, Mich., passed away on December 12, 2013.
She was born to Robert and Mary Kaarlela on Feb. 15, 1922. Edith attended school in Keweenaw Bay and at Baraga High School. After graduation she initially worked in the office of an elected state official, Billy Burke. She then moved to Detriot and worked for several years as a secretary for a group of manufacturing agents. On Sept. 24, 1960, she married Reino Raski. When he retired, the couple spent their winters in Largo, Fla., Reino preceded her in death in September 2000.
Edith had been an active charter member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Southfield. She had served as both a teacher and Superintendent of their Sunday School. She was also an active member and hard working volunteer at the Finnish Cultural Center in Farmington Hills. Edith enjoyed photography and left many photo documented trips she took both within the U.S. and abroad. She was an avid letter writer who kept in close touch with many relatives and friends. Once widowed, Edith resided with her sister, Ruth Kaarlela, in South Lyon and then at Fox Run Retirement Village. She leaves her sister to carry on.
Edith was preceded in death by ten older siblings. She was loved by many, and leaves numerous friends, nieces and nephews.
Burial services will be private.
A luncheon to celebrate Edith's life will be held in the future in the Finn Center.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Finnish Center Association, Finlandia University, Fox Run Benevolent Care Fund, Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Southfield, or the Hospice of one's choice.
