DOLLAR BAY - On a wild evening in Dollar Bay, Shelby Seppanen of Jeffers scored more points than any local player has in a single game in more than three seasons, and it still wasn't enough to overcome a Bays squad that made 13 three-pointers.
The final was Dollar Bay 73, Jeffers 66. Seppanen scored 35 points, a figure unsurpassed since Maria Almquist racked up 38 for Hancock in a Class D regional semifinal game against Bark River-Harris on March 9, 2010. She had at least six in each quarter and 12 in the second frame alone.
"Everything Shelby put in the air went in," DB coach Steve Krahling said.
His own team appeared to have nearly the same magic. Carli Daavettila had a team-best 21 points, all from seven triples. Sister Julia had 16 more points, as four Bays scored in double figures.
"Carli came up big, as did Jamie (Sertich) with the 3-point shots. Our younger girls came up big in he third when Julia was on the bench with four fouls," Krahling said.
Dollar Bay held a 41-33 lead at the half, and though the Jets closed to within three after three quarters at 52-49, the Bays poured in 21 more points to finish it off.
Sertich added 17 points and Meagan Kangas 11 for DB (2-1, 2-0 CCC). The Bays play their next eight games on the road, starting Friday in Ontonagon.
Jeffers, which falls to 1-3, 0-1 in the CCC, also got 13 points from Alexa Clouthier and 11 from Haley Makela. The Jets host Calumet Friday.
