HOUGHTON - A Dollar Bay man faces a charge of second degree murder after his wife died as a result of an alleged domestic assault by him, according to the office of Houghton County Prosecuting Attorney Michael Makinen.

On Dec. 8, Houghton County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested Nima Nassiri, 34, and charged him with assault to do great bodily harm less than murder for the alleged assault on his wife, 27-year-old Senaz Nezami.

Initially Nezami was taken to Portage Health following the alleged assault.

She was then transferred Marquette General Hospital, where she died Thursday as a result her injuries, according to a press release from the sheriff's office.

At the time of his arrest, Nassiri was lodged in Houghton County jail with his bond set at $5 million.

Nezami and Nassiri recently moved to Dollar Bay. Nezami, who was from Tehran, Iran, was enrolled in Michigan Technological University in the master's degree program in environmental engineering. She was to start classes next month.

Nassiri was initially scheduled to appear in district court Friday morning for a preliminary examination.

According to district court officials that hearing has been cancelled and instead he will face arraignment on the amended charges at that time.

Following Friday's arraignment, a preliminary examination will most likely be scheduled within the next two weeks.
