Soumis' big night leads Glads

The Daily Mining Gazette

ONTONAGON - Tony Soumis recorded a triple-double and Ontonagon recorded its first victory of the 2013-14 season by beating Dollar Bay 47-39 in Copper Country Conference play Thursday.

Soumis led all scorers with 24 points, but also contributed 11 steals and 10 rebounds.

"He was getting steals on the press, he was getting steals on the halfcourt defense and he was able to turn some of those steals into layups," Ontonagon coach Tim Nelson said.

Soumis was at the center of a zone defense to which the Gladiators (1-2, 1-0 CCC) switched after the visiting Bays scored 18 points in the first quarter to lead by five after eight minutes.

Ontonagon outscored DB in the next three quarters.

Soumis pressed the issue throughout, scoring eight of his 24 from the free-throw line.

"If they didn't stop him he was getting a layup and if they did try and stop him they were getting called for fouls," Nelson said.

Steve Joyal led Dollar Bay's offense with 13 points. The Bays go into the holiday break 0-3 (0-2 CCC) and will resume Jan. 2 at Lake Linden-Hubbell.

Kyle Karttunen pitched in 10 for Ontonagon, which plays Monday at Chassell. The boys will start a varsity back-to-back with the girls and tip off at 5:30 p.m.

L'Anse 64, Baraga 37

BARAGA - L'Anse iced its rival by halftime, outscoring Baraga 21-4 and 18-4 in the first two quarters.

"Their pressure was really really intense and pretty effective. It caused us to turn the ball over a lot," Baraga coach Scott Artley said.

The Purple Hornets spread their offense around, with Ryan LaBerge and Jimmy Veker each scoring 15 points and four others notching at least five.

The win puts L'Anse back at the .500 mark (2-2) going into its last game of 2013 tonight at West Iron County.

Brendan Varline led the Vikings with nine points. Baraga (1-3) is idle until a Jan. 2 trip to Jeffers.

Artley took a moment to thank those who participated in a fundraiser for the Hammerberg family and their child's fight against cancer.

Lake Linden-Hubbell 48, Calumet 40

CALUMET - LL-H got the stop it needed to hold on in a battle of unbeatens Thursday.

Up two with about 45 seconds to go, the Lakes broke up a Calumet post entry pass for a steal, then closed it out at the free-throw line.

After a slow start, neither side built a big lead, but the Lakes' 17 points in the third quarter (including nine from guard Tyler Roose) helped them carry a lead into the finishing stretch.

"Every time we lost a shooter or didn't close out like we needed to, they made us pay," Calumet coach Mike Ojala said.

The Lakes got a game-high 20 points from Roose and 10 more from Brett Poissant.

LL-H (4-0) is done for 2012 and off until a Jan. 2 home game vs. Dollar Bay.

For Calumet, Paul Torola scored a team-high 16, though the total was bolstered by 10-of-11 free-throw shooting.

Jake Pieti kicked in 10 for the Copper Kings (3-1), who will come back from break to host L'Anse Jan. 2.

PAINESDALE - Jeffers made the most of a poignant home opener Thursday, routing their rivals with three players scoring in double figures.

The Jets are dedicating their 2013-14 season in memory of recently deceased 2012 alumna Brittany Nicholas, and with monogrammed memorial patches on their home white uniforms, outscored Chassell 19-5 and 18-8 in the first two quarters.

"Pretty much everybody did what we were supposed to tonight," Jeffers coach Duane Snell said. "The big guys rebounded, the Outinen boys had great floor games."

Alex Outinen led all scorers with 18 points, while Brant Ryynanen had 13 for the Jets, playing against the team for which he played last season.

Zach Nicholas added 10 points and Christopher Outinen six assists for Jeffers (2-1, 2-0 CCC), which will continue a four-game homestand Monday against Hancock.

Chassell falls to 0-3 and will host Ontonagon Monday night. The Panthers got seven points apiece from Jordy LaTendresse and Jake Tuomi.
