EWEN - Lance Berwald's 3-pointer from the corner with 4.9 seconds to go was the deciding blow as Bessemer rallied in the fourth quarter for a 48-47 Porcupine Mountain Conference win at Ewen-Trout Creek Friday.
"We were very patient all night. We attacked selectively like we wanted to. In the beginning of the fourth quarter, we got a little too overzealous," E-TC coach Brad Besonen said.
The Panthers (1-4, 0-1 PMC) carried a 41-31 lead into the final corner, but watched the Speedboys draw closer early in the quarter, setting the stage for a nip-and-tuck finish.
John Berglund made both ends of a one-and-one to put E-TC up inside the final minute, but on the other end, Ben Zielinski drove to the basket and drew help before kicking it out to Berwald for the eventual game-winner.
E-TC inbounded from in front of its bench with 1.8 seconds left, but Landon Maki missed a three at the buzzer as an open cutter drove to the basket, Besonen said.
Berglund led the Panthers with 12 points. E-TC is off until it hosts Ironwood on Jan. 7.

IRON RIVER - L'Anse outscored West Iron County 41-21 in the second half and registered a 69-55 West PAC boys basketball victory at Charles Greenlund Gymnasium Friday.
"We didn't rotate correctly defensively to stop what they were doing," WIC Coach Dan Schive said. "In the first half it was just a really good high school basketball game. We did what we wanted offensively."
Andy Ridolphi, 23 points, led the Wykons, who carried a 34-28 lead into the second half. Ryan Rogers and Adam Newby each chipped in 12.
Jimmy Veker, 29; Jacob Ostermeyer, 21, and Ryan LeBerge, 14, paced the Hornets.
"Early on, they beat us on dribble penetration and they had too many easy looks at the basket,"?L'Anse coach Mike Ostermeyer said.
"The key to the turnaround was defensively, we kept them out of the paint and turned them into jump shooters."
West Iron (1-2, 0-1) visits Houghton on Monday.
"We can't afford to lose," Schive said.
