CHASSELL - Brandi Hainault is a teacher at Chassell Elementary School, and when she learned the brother of two students is going through chemotherapy in Ann Arbor, Hainault came up with an idea to help the family meet the expenses of travel for treatment.

Hainault said 4-year-old Brody Etelamaki has brain tumors, which were diagnosed as cancerous in April. He's at the University of Michigan Hospital receiving treatment.

"They travel a lot more," she said.

The idea she had to raise money for the Etelamaki's Hainault said, was to use revenue from two basketball games on Dec. 23 between the Chassell Panthers and the Ontonagon Gladiators.

"Everybody at school, they went in on it," she said.

The Shoot for a Cure provided money to the family from admission fees to the game, as well as money raised from a bake sale, 50/50 raffle, silent auction and donations, Hainault said.

"It turned out very well," she said.

The money raised is still being counted, Hainault said.

Besides the money raised during the basketball games, Hainault said donations from businesses and community members are also being accepted to help the family.

Hainault said she experienced a similar situation as the Etelamakis because her son was diagnosed with leukemia two years ago.

"I kind of know what it costs," she said.

There is nothing set up with local banks to receive donations, yet, but Hainault said those who would like to donate can send donations to Chassell Schools PO Box 140 Chassell, MI 49916.

For more information, Hainault said she can be reached at Chassell Schools at 483-2132.
