Why not change the city’s name?

January 2, 2014
The Daily Mining Gazette

To the editor:

Regarding the hiring of a city manager, Houghton Mayor Bob Backon stated (DMG Dec 19): "We began with 20 [applications] including one who was applying for city manager of Houghton Lake." To end this confusion, we suggest the new city manager, Eric Waara, give consideration to initiating the process of changing the City's name from Houghton to Not-Houghton-Lake. An added bonus is the resulting acronym NHL, which would bemost appropriate for the birthplace of professional ice hockey.
