Accident causes power outage

January 6, 2014

HOUGHTON - As if local residents didn't have enough to contend with as temperatures dropped to double digits below zero and wind chills as low as 40 below, more than 1,000 Houghton residents got up in the dark this morning.

The Upper Peninsula Power Company said a traffic accident involving a power pole shortly after 7 a.m. today knocked out electricity in much of the eastern portion of the city.

UPPCO said crews were on site and the outage was not expected to last beyond mid-morning.

With the frigid temperatures residents are reminded to dress appropriately and to avoid any exposed skin. More on the nation's cold weather can be found on page 2A.
