Russell “Fuzzy” Waara

AHMEEK - Russell "Fuzzy" Waara, 71, a resident of Ahmeek, passed away on late Thursday night, January 2, 2014, at the Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital in Laurium.

Russell "Fuzzy" was born June 13, 1942, in Laurium, a son of Rueben and Thelma (Laitinen) Waara.

He was a graduate of Calumet High School, Class of 1960. He was a veteran having served with the U.S. Navy following High School.

On August 22, 1964, he married the former Marilyn Chynoweth in Ahmeek.

Fuzzy lived his entire life in the Copper Country. He worked as a butcher at Super Value then for Fraki's Market until his retirement.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time at the camp in Big Traverse. Fuzzy was known to many as a jokester.

Russell "Fuzzy" was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn in 2008; an infant son, Brian; and a son, Brad; as well as his parents.

Surviving are sons, Rob Waara of Miami, Fla., and Marko (Alisa) Waara of Columbus, Ohio; daughter, Tammie (Gary) Dupuis of Calumet; five grandchildren, Hayden, Hailey, Alyssa, Samantha and Tyler; sister, Doris Rowe of Calumet; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home on Thursday, January 9, 2014.

Funeral services will follow on January 9, 2014, at 6 p.m. in the Erickson-Crowley-Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet with Pastor Bob White officiating.

Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Ahmeek in the spring time.
