Gremlins junk Flivvers 9-0

IRON MOUNTAIN - If Kingsford thought it had a chance of returning to the win column Thursday evening at Mountain View Ice Arena, the Houghton Gremlins quickly dashed any hope.

Scoring twice in the first two minutes and completely overpowering the Flivvers start to finish, the No. 2 ranked Gremlins (15-2) whacked the Flivvers 9-0 in a two-period Great Lakes Hockey Conference contest.

"They're just a great team," Flivvers coach Jim Peterson, his team suffering its 10th straight defeat. "They can shoot, they can skate and their kids work hard. They just dominated us."

Raymond Brice's hat trick led the Gremlin goal scorers. Spencer Donnelly added two goals, and Connor Hannon also had a pair. Former Flivver Reid Pietila notched a goal and two assists. Hannon and Jed Kallio tacked on two assists each.

"I thought we really skated hard tonight," Houghton coach Corey Markham said. "We came down, we moved our legs, and we made a lot of really nice passing plays.

"We just took care of businesses, and that's what we're looking for right now."

Goalie Saves - H: Marcus Gloss 6-1 - 7; K: Wes Paupore 15-19 - 34.

Hannon opened the scoring 46 seconds into the game, standing away from traffic to the right of the net and flipping in a loose puck.

Less than a minute later, Brice wrapped around the back of the net from left to right and threw a backhander far side, to the top corner.

Erich Walter made it 3-0 midway through the first by slapping in a rebound. Hannon added his second less than a minute later, and Brice beat Flivvers goalie Wes Paupore high on the glove side for a 5-0 Gremlin lead after one.

A five-minute major and game misconduct for checking from behind called on Kingsford's Marcus Andrews shortly after the start of the second period resulted in two Houghton power play tallies.

Pietila knocked in the first, while Donnelly connected on a nifty one-timer for the next. Stationed near the goal line to the left of Paupore, Donnelly took a feed from the blue line and flung it up high on the far side.

Donnelly added another power play goal at 11:14 and Brice jammed in the ninth, and his third of the game, a few minutes later on yet another power play.

Paupore made 34 saves in the two-period loss. Houghton netminder Marcus Gloss saw seven shots, just one in the second period.

"You can't get to the level Houghton is at without working hard off the ice," Peterson said. "That's what it is going to take, not just coming to the rink for 45 minutes. They work hard to get where they are. They react to every situation, they support each other. They are strong from the smallest kid to the biggest. Just a tough team."

Kingsford (2-10) hosts Calumet Saturday at 7 p.m.
