TRENTON - The Copper Country had a perfect weekend at the MIHL Showcase, completing the two-game weekend with wins for both Houghton and Calumet Saturday.
Houghton defeated Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett 6-3 in a rematch of the 2012 Division 3 state championship game, while Calumet took down Livonia Churchill by the same score.
Houghton got five goals in a row to turn a 2-1 deficit into a big lead Saturday.
Connor Hannon's unassisted tally opened the scoring at 7:07 of the first period, and after Liggett scored twice in 49 seconds to take the lead, Houghton struck right back 57 seconds later with an unassisted power-play goal by Jon Bostwick.
Bostwick and Ray Brice scored in the second period to give Houghton a 4-2 lead after 34 minutes. Brice tallied another power-play goal 55 seconds into the third and Jed Kallio added an insurance goal at 10:23.
Marcus Gloss made 24 saves in the win.
Eric Mattila's hat trick spurred the Kings' win over Churchill Saturday. He got the scoresheet started at 10:53 of the first, only for Churchill to tie it up 52 seconds later.
Goals from Jake Anderson and Travis Porter helped the Copper Kings to a 3-2 lead before Mattila struck again at 9:59 of the second, just 58 seconds after Porter's goal put Calumet ahead.
Churchill scored early in the third, but the Kings finished it off with empty-netters from Braden Anderson and Mattila late.
Tyler Hubbard stopped 25 shots for the Copper Kings, while Bradley Erkkila and Maxx Fredrickson had a pair of assists apiece.
Houghton (18-3) is at Calumet (5-15-1) Tuesday.
