CALUMET - The Calumet girls' basketball team escaped a bad shooting night in time to defeat West Iron County 44-39 in WestPAC play Thursday.
Calumet coach Don Hill said his team had looks from the elbow and the corners against the Wykons 3-2 zone but didn't make many of them. He had Calumet down for 4-for-27 3-point shooting.
"On a night where we did not shoot very well and we did not rebound very well, we were able to, in crunch time, make enough plays to pull out a win," Hill said.
WIC led by two with a minute left, but Tristan Baranowski drilled her only three of the game off a turnover to give Calumet a one-point edge and Lexie Rowe finished it at the free-throw line with the help of some turnovers collected.
Rowe led Calumet (11-5, 3-4 WestPAC) with 16 points. The Copper Kings host Ontonagon tonight.
Meg Miatech led all scorers with 20 for the Wykons.

ONTONAGON - Brooke Turin's three inside the last 20 seconds helped Ontonagon grab a Copper Country Conference win over the hard-charging Lady Vikings Thursday.
Baraga led by six with less than two minutes left, but Hope Pintar made a three to cut the gap in half, and after two stops, Turin split two free throws to tie the game with about 30 seconds left, then made what would be the winning shot after an offensive rebound on the second shot.
"I think we might have stole this one because they controlled the tempo of the game quite a bit," Ontonagon coach Dick Franti said.
Baraga's Gabby Mayo had 22 points to lead all scorers and was 'awesome' inside, Franti said.
