Keep the mine hoist in the dark

February 19, 2014
The Daily Mining Gazette

To the editor:

People write how wonderful it is to see the mine hoist lit up at night. Well if you drive out to North Entry park at night and look you see those lights from there. This is nothing more than light pollution and a waste of electrical energy.

Being a member of International Dark Skies, IDA.org, and an amateur astronomer I wish they would shut them off. The Keweenaw has some of the darkest skies in the country. Let's keep them that way! Donate money for the historical park, not for the light pollution.
