WAKEFIELD - Ewen-Trout Creek's girls' basketball season ended at the hands of district host Wakefield-Marenisco Monday, with the Cardinals scoring a 48-35 victory.
Scoring was a big issue for the Panthers, who fell behind by nine points after a quarter. Though they scrambled back to 19-18 at the half after Taylor Niemi's bucket at the buzzer, they went back behind early in the second half and stayed there.
"It comes down to scoring and making open shots," E-TC coach Jacky Besonen said to the Daily Globe of Ironwood. "They played zone (defense) and you have to move the ball around to get a good shot. But we haven't shot or scored well all year. It was nice to see our two seniors (Taylor Niemi, Becca Warnke) end up getting double-doubles in their last games. As I told the girls in the locker room after the game, next year we will still be very young and a lot of girls need to play a lot of basketball."
Taylor Niemi led E-TC (2-18) with 14 points. Warnke added 11.
Lauren Grace paced the Cardinals with 16 points despite foul trouble. W-M hosts Bessemer in Wednesday's semifinals.
