HURONTOWN - James H. Zerbst, 72, a resident of Hurontown, passed away Friday evening, February 28, 2014, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock following a lengthy illness.
He was born on April 11, 1941, in Houghton, a son of the late Fred and Ida (Kangas) Zerbst. He was a graduate of the Houghton High School.
Mr. Zerbst was a veteran having served with the United States Army.
On June 28, 1968, he was united in marriage to the former Beth Steinmetz. For the past 45 years they have made their home in Hurontown.
Jim was employed with Houghton Bottling Company, Ala Gas Company (now Ferrell Gas), Gundlach Contracting and retired from the Houghton County Transfer Station as Manager.
Mr. Zerbst was active with Copper Country Junior Hockey Association, coaching various teams and serving on the Board. He was a trustee for Portage Township for a number of years. For many years, Jim enjoyed working on farm tractors in his garage.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his sisters, Katherine, Florence and Shirley; his brothers, Fred, John, Robert, Raymond and Dennis.
Surviving are his wife, Beth Zerbst of Hurontown; his sons, David (Rosie) Zerbst of Nashville, Tenn. and Daniel (Cindy) of Negaunee; his beloved grandchildren, Avery, Hannah, Josh and Ben; his sister, Helen Bowden of Hancock; his brothers, Michael Zerbst of Hurontown, Donald (Ruth) Zerbst of Ironwood and David Zerbst of Iron Mountain; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial from Jim will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2014 in St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church in Houghton with Fr. John Martignon to celebrate.
Spring burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton.
Friends may call on Tuesday, March 4, 2013, from 9:30 until time of services at the Church.
