LAURIUM - John G. Paavilainen, 72, a resident of Laurium, passed away Saturday, March 1, 2014, at Marquette General Hospital.
He was born February 6, 1942, in Painesdale, a son of Sulo and Elizabeth (Kangas) Paavilainen. He attended local schools and graduated from Calumet High School, Class of 1962.
John first worked for C&H Mine and then the White Pine Mine until 1994. He enjoyed wood carving and berry picking. He was an avid Lions fan. He also loved fishing and hunting.
John served with the US Army Reserves in the 1960s.
He was married to the former Starlett Olsen on August 8, 1987, in Ahmeek.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, David and Ronald; stepson, Bobby Sweeny; and a brother-in-law, Chet Porter.
Surviving are his wife, Starlett, of Laurium; two daughters, Donna (Rickey) White of Calumet, Tammy (Robert) Fountaine of Calumet; two step-daugthers, Kim (Tim) Reilly of Calumet and Stacy (Doug) Kemppainen of Clarkston, Mich.; eight grandchildren, Emily, Chelsea, Rheann, Cierra, Tom, Miklial, Jamie and Rickey; sister, Elizabeth Porter of Bangor, Maine; sister-in-law, Jackie Paavilainen of Calumet; one aunt; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
John was an avid animal lover. He also left behind his beloved cats, Fluffy and Sandi.
A memorial service will be held for John on Wednesday March 6, 2014 at 8 p.m. in the Erickson-Crowley-Peterson Funeral Home. Pastor Ken Toth will officiate.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, March 6, 2014, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Spring burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Ahmeek.
