To the editor:
Although evangelical George W. Bush's presidency was a tragedy, his homophobic, anti-abortion, anti-nature, creationist agenda had at least one unintended consequence: it motivated me to study evangelical Christian beliefs and the King James Bible (KJB), God's supposed literal inerrant word. What I discovered is the KJB is filled with hundreds of inconsistencies and contradictions and that evangelical Christianity misrepresents that these contradictions don't exist.
With Easter approaching, examination of several verses from the Easter story will prove my point. First, Jesus says in Luke 18:33,"and the third day he (Jesus) shall rise again"? Rise again? Jesus arose twice? Second, the KJB says Jesus arose the third day (Sunday morning) after being buried Friday night. But how can that be true when Jesus says in Matthew 12:40, "so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth."? Isn't the fourth day (Monday evening) the earliest Jesus could have arisen? Isn't it also true no one knows when Jesus arose because no one saw Jesus arise? Third, how could Jesus, who died, be the eternal God (John 1:1)? Fourth, why would Judas hang himself (Matthew 27:5) and Jesus say (Mark 14:21), "woe to (Judas)...Goodif he had never been born" when Jesus said (Matthew 19:28) that the disciples would sit on twelve thrones in heaven judging the twelve tribes of Israel? Fifth, did the cock crow once (Matthew 26:75, Luke 22:61) before Peter denied Jesus thrice or twice (Mark 14:72)? Or did it crow once, then twice, then once again and each time Peter denied Jesus thrice? Sixth, why isn't the story of zombie saints (Matthew 27:52), who rose from their graves and walked around Jerusalem, apparently shopping, recorded elsewhere? Seventh, why do Christians expect to spend eternity in heaven when Jesus says Matthew 24:35), "Heaven shall pass away"? And in which heaven: the heaven created the first day (Genesis 1:1,5) or the other heaven created the second day (Genesis 1:8)? Eighth, why would Jesus die on the cross for the remission (forgiveness) of sins (Matthew 26:28) when Jesus had already said he forgave sins in Matthew 9:6, Luke 5:20, and Mark 2:5 ("Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.") without dying on the cross?
