MT. PLEASANT, Mich. - Mary Catherine Graham, 61, died April 14, 2014, at her home in Mt. Pleasant, Mich. The cause was pancreatic cancer. She was born in Pontiac, Mich., on October 4, 1952, to James Howard Ward and Willie Bea (Moore) Ward.
Mary was a graduate of Pontiac Northern High School, Class of 1969. She received both a B.A. and an M.A. in English Language and Literature from the University of Michigan in 1974 and 1975 respectively. She also received an M.S. in rhetoric from Michigan Technological University in 1989.
She worked as a copy editor for 20 years; most significantly, she was editorial assistant at The Michigan Historical Review from 2001 to 2013.
Mary married Sidney West Graham on May 25, 1974. Their son Matthew Howard Graham was born June 25, 1976. He currently lives in Tempe, Ariz., and works as a system administrator for the Arizona Republic newspaper.
Mary was active in Zonta and sang in the choir of the First United Methodist Church. She was known for her sense of humor, generosity and deep and personal interest in her many friends. She was known for her love of animals, and she rescued many stray cats. During her final illness, she took great joy in feeding birds and squirrels.
Her family appreciates the assistance of MidMichigan Home Hospice Care, and they are grateful to many friends and neighbors for their assistance and thoughtfulness during Mary's final illness.
She is survived by her husband and son; her sister, Sandra Morales; nieces, Kimberly Flores and Miranda Clancy; nephew, Christopher Flores; great nieces, Melissa Clancy and Sabrina Hurd; great nephews, Michael Clancy, Stephen Lockard, and Nicholas Flores; and many cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Jean Frances Flores; nephew, Jeffrey Morales; and brothers-in-law, Jose Flores and Hector Morales.
Visitation will be in the Clark Family Funeral Chapel on Friday, April 18, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Services will take place in the Mt. Pleasant First United Methodist Church at 11 am on Saturday, April 19, 2014.
