DODGEVILLE - Virginia I. Manninen, 89, a former resident of Dodgeville, passed away Saturday, April 26, 2014, at the Franklin House of Portage Pointe in Hancock where she had been a resident patient for the past year.
She was born on April 1, 1925, in South Range, a daughter of the late Charles "Kalle" and Amanda (Jylha) Telin. As a child, she attended the Adams Township Schools.
Virginia then worked for the Stella Cheese Company to help support her family.
On July 21, 1949, she was united in marriage to Rudolph Manninen. The couple resided in Barberton, Ohio, Detroit, Mich., Denver, Colo., and Dodgeville, where Virginia resided for 50 years. On October 7, 2003, Rudy preceded her in death.
Virginia was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock, where she was active with the Quilters and Suomi Kerho. She also was a life member of Percy Wilson Post 115 D.A.V. Auxiliary of Chassell, local VFW Auxiliary Posts, The Copper Range Historical Society, Painesdale Mine Hoist Association and AARP.
Preceding her in death were her husband; her daughter, Karla Jean Manninen; her parents; and her brothers, Ralph "Kalle," Eino, Ahti, Reino, Oliver and Alvar "Haakon."
Surviving are her children, Diane (Ernie) Alatalo of Dodgeville, Michael Manninen of Dodgeville, Denise (William) Hendrickson of Atlantic Mine, Kevin (Liisa) Manninen of Atlantic Mine; her grandchildren, Melissa (Jon Jr.) Luse, Janis Alatalo, Steve Alatalo, Jolene (Shawn) Erlandson and their children, April, Sean, Laura, Emilee and Kristopher, Michael Manninen, Scott (Jessica) Hendrickson and their children, Nicolette and Lily, Dale (Pam) Hendrickson and their children, Savannah and Cassius, Brian (Ashley) Hendrickson and their children, Kayden and Danika, Mark (Danielle Taavola) Hendrickson; her brother-in-law, Donald Manninen of Livonia; her sister-in-law, Marie Rhodes of Doylestown, Ohio; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services for Virginia will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 3, 2014, in the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Hancock with Rev. DJ Rasner to officiate.
Friends may call on Friday, May 2, 2014, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Hancock and on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the church.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family suggests that memorials be given to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in memory of Virginia I. Manninen.
