HOUGHTON - A suspect in a Monday domestic situation and one in a Friday high-speed chase were arraigned Wednesday in 97th District Court.
Amber Smith, 22, was arraigned on charges of unlawful driving away of an automobile and third-degree fleeing and eluding a police officer, both five-year felonies. Smith recently moved to the area from Georgia. On Friday, Michigan State Police Post Calumet troopers attempted to pull Smith over for driving infractions. Instead, troopers said, she fled north, and was eventually stopped when troopers blocked her with their cars on U.S. 41 by Paavola Road. The troopers subsequently learned Smith did not have permission to drive the car, the MSP said.
Also Wednesday, Joel Michaelson, 28, of Pelkie, was charged with interfering with electronic communications, a two-year felony, and domestic violence, a 93-day misdemeanor. Houghton County sheriff's deputies arrested Michaelson at a residence on Bear Creek Road Monday morning. According to the Houghton County Sheriff's Office, Michaelson was armed and barricaded himself inside the home for more than two hours.
Preliminary hearings for both were set for May 14.
