HOUGHTON - Relay For Life doesn't take place for more than a month, but an event to raise funds for the event will take place Saturday, according to Mary Ann Schulz.
Schulz, who is the Houghton Relay For Life chairwoman, said the third annual Relay Gala will take place starting at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Continental Fire Co. on Montezuma Avenue in Houghton. There will be a performance of acoustic music from 6 to 8 p.m. by Bruce and Noble Rundman. Food will be served at 7 p.m.
Tickets for the event are $20 each, Schulz said. They are available at Nicholas Insurance Agency in Houghton, the Portage Health cafeteria, and Favorites Custom Apparel in Houghton.
It's hoped most people will buy their tickets ahead of the event, because it will help with planning, Schulz said, but they will be available at the door, also.
The food will be prepared by Portage Health director of food services, Mark Pittillo, Schulz said. The menu includes beef, chicken, shrimp and desserts.
"The food is going to be over the top," she said.
Also during the gala, Schulz said there will be a silent auction and raffle. The auction will feature many donated items, including a large framed and autographed poster with pictures of Bart Starr and Brett Favre.
"It was valued at over $1,000," she said.
There will also be an autographed Green Bay Packers football and hand-made drum up for auction, among other things, all of which have been donated.
"We have some nice stuff," she said.
Dress for the event is either formal or informal, Schulz said.
"Blue jeans are welcome, but if someone wants to get dressed up, that's OK, too," she said.
The 2013 Relay For Life raised more than $100,000, Schulz said. This year's relay will take place June 20 and 21 at the Houghton High School track.
All of the money raised at the Relay Gala will go toward this year's Relay For Life, Schulz said.
"Because of the generosity of the Continental Fire Co. and Portage Health there is no overhead (for the event)," she said.
