Houghton honors

Houghton High School recently honored the Class of 2014 for its academic and athletic accomplishments. Among the honors awarded were the Herman Gundlach Family Memorial Award, indicative of the school's top senior female athlete. This year's winner is Elisa Jurmu. Jurmu earned nine varsity letters, including four in track and field, three in basketball and two in volleyball. Among her individual accomplishments, she was the 2013 U.P. Class ABC Player of the Year in basketball and was named the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association All-Class Dream Team in both 2013 and 2014, was WestPAC Player of the Year in 2013 and 2014 scored 1,045 career points. She was named to the All-WestPAC Second Team in volleyball twice and has placed five times in events at U.P. Track and Field Finals, where she is scheduled to compete in four events for the Gremlins.
Zach Verran earned the Einer F. Anderson Award for the top senior male athlete of the year. He had nine varsity letters, four in track and field, three in hockey and two in football.
