PENTWATER / LAURIUM, Michigan - Esther A. (Abramson) Seaman of Pentwater and Laurium, 85, passed away on Friday, May 23, 2014.
She was born in Laurium, to Victor and Lyle (Talvensaari) Abramson. Gifted in math, Esther was the first woman to graduate from the engineering course at Calumet High School (1946). In 1949, she graduated from Michigan College of Mining and Technology (MCMT), now Michigan Technological University, with a bachelor of science in Math. Upon graduating from MCMT, she became one of the earliest computer programmers at Bartol Research Foundation, Swarthmore, Pennsylvania; Westinghouse Electric Corp., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Kansas City, Missouri. After taking a break to raise her daughter, she returned to work in the math department of Lyons Twp. High School, LaGrange, Illinois.
Esther was also a gifted musician and dancer. In high school, she performed as a piano soloist and in ensembles with her sister Jean Abramson for a variety of organizations and in recitals. She also played the clarinet and tenor saxophone in the Calumet Youth Band. At "Tech" (MCMT) Esther met Frederic Seaman. They married in April, 1950 and celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary this April. Early in their marriage, they competed in ice dancing and ballroom. During her years as a housewife and mother, she studied classical guitar. Animals were always drawn to Esther. Her cats were an important part of her life. In addition, she also enjoyed playing chess, weaving, sewing, knitting, and interior design.
She is survived by her husband, Frederic D. Seaman; daughter, Victoria Seaman (Brian Tolan) of Binghamton, New York; two grandsons, Ian and Matti; and a sister and lifelong best friend, Alice (Abramson) Archambeau of Baraga and Laurium.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Victor and Lyle Abramson; sister, Dr. Jean Abramson; brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Jenny Abramson; brother-in-law, Roland Archambeau; and good friend and cousin, Paula Ervin.
According to her wishes, there will be no funeral services.
