DOLLAR BAY - Norma Jean (Joos) Filppula, 72, a former Dollar Bay resident, died on Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at the Angels Touch Assisted Living for Dementia in DePere, Wisconsin, after a long and difficult battle with frontotemporal dementia.
She was born on January 20, 1942, in Roanoke, Virginia, to Edward and Juanita (Lester) Joos.
Norma married Harvey Filppula in Ontonagon, on June 11, 1960. For nearly all of their married life, they made their home in Dollar Bay.
Norma was a member of First Lutheran Church in Dollar Bay. She was a devoted mother and wife. She was an avid scrapbooker documenting family life and adventures, accomplished seamstress, and spent extensive time studying the family's ancestry. She was a wonderful artist and had many hobbies exemplifying her creativity through the years. Her love for our Lord was evident in all she did.
Norma was preceded in death by her mother, Juanita Joos; and her father, Edward Joos; a sister, Betty Knickerbocker; and a brother, Curtis Joos.
Surviving are her husband of 54 years, Harvey Filppula; daughters, Karen (Lori McArthur) Filppula of Green Bay, Wisconsin, Laura (Lynette Walcher) Filppula of Dearborn Heights, Michigan, and Diane (Matthew) Filppula-McNab of Dearborn Heights, Michigan; several grandchildren, Noah and Joshua Filppula-McArthur; Aela, Alexandra and Lindsay McNab; Dustin (Marie) Cleveland and Nate Walcher; and great-grandchild, Dorian Cleveland; sisters, Amy (Jim) Nehmer of Ontonagon, Fredricka (Larry) Whitney of Gaylord, Michigan; brother, Edward (Edith) of Lake Worth, Florida; and many family and friends.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Angels Touch Assisted Living for Dementia in DePere for their wonderful care and compassion, and to Heartland Hospice for their guidance over the last month of Norma's life.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, June 23, 2014, in the First Lutheran Church in Dollar Bay, with Pastor Sally Wilke to officiate.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of service on Monday in the church.
Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Greenland.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established.
