HOUGHTON - Steven R. Seidel, 62, a resident of Houghton, passed away Thursday morning, June 26, 2014, at home.
He was born on July 31, 1951, in Evanston, Illinois, a son of the late Roland and Natalie (Gatzke) Seidel. Steven was raised in Des Plaines, Illinois and Kankakee, Illinois. After graduating from Westview High School, Steven earned a BA in mathematics from St. Olaf College. He went on to complete a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in computer science.
Dr. Seidel began his teaching career at Virginia Commonwealth University. In 1984, he joined the faculty at Michigan Technological University. He retired as a professor this past March.
On January 5, 1974, he was united in marriage to Ellen Yurista.
Dr. Seidel was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Houghton. He had many interests including music and art but truly enjoyed anything automotive and especially trains.
Surviving are his wife, Ellen Seidel of Houghton; his children, Hannah (Eric Chase) Seidel of Astoria, New York and Carl (Aimee) Seidel of Iron Mountain; his grandchildren, Sophia, Eva and Violet; his brother, Charles (Mary) Seidel of Houston, Texas; and an extended family of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service for Steven will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2014, in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Houghton with Rev. Bucky Beach officiating.
Friends may call on Monday, June 30, 2014, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Houghton.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Doctors without Borders, or a charity of the donors choosing.
