Emergency operations center activated after floods

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The state of Michigan has activated the State Emergency Operations Center due to severe flooding in southeastern Michigan.

The state says the center was activated late Monday, following rains that began around midday. State personnel are monitoring the situation and coordinating response with local officials.

On Tuesday, the state said that drivers are being asked to avoid being on the road during the morning commute due to impassible roads. Michigan State Police troopers worked Monday and into Tuesday to assist stranded motorists and clear vehicles from roadways.

The Michigan Department of Transportation also has been working assess damage to roadways in the wake of the flooding and reopen freeways.
