Bay City delays vote on child migrant resolution

August 19, 2014
Associated Press

BAY CITY, Mich. (AP) — The Bay City Commission has delayed voting on a resolution to support housing child immigrants from Central America during a meeting that drew protesters and supporters of the plan.

The Bay City Times reports (http://bit.ly/1Aunr5L ) commissioners were expected to debate the resolution Monday. Commissioners say the document wasn't finished in time for a vote.

Officials with Wellspring Lutheran Services have said the nonprofit has secured a federal contract to house the children in Bay City and Farmington Hills. Officials have said the children will be at area sites for 30 to 45 days.

A city commissioner says the resolution won't carry regulatory weight and the commission just wants a chance to comment on the agreement.

Another commissioner says he expects it to appear on the commission's Sept. 8 meeting agenda.
