POSTED: September 11, 2009
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) — Deanna Nolan scored 34 points to lead Detroit to a 94-87 victory over the New York Liberty on Thursday night, moving the defending champion Shock on the verge of clinching a playoff spot.

The Shock (17-16) continued their late-season surge, winning for the eight time in their last 10 games to move one-half game behind second place Atlanta in the Eastern Conference.

Essence Carson scored a career-high 28 points for New York (12-21), which lost its fourth straight. The Liberty have already been eliminated from playoff contention.

The Shock led 44-34 at the half, and moved the margin to 65-51 going into the fourth, but struggled to put the Liberty away.

New York took a 71-69 lead on Sidney Spencer’s 3-pointer with 4:42 left, but Kara Braxton scored the next five points to put Detroit back in front. Shavonte Zellous added a 3-pointer to give the Shock a 77-71 advantage, but New York came back again.
