Who wants to go to a school that has limited social opportunities, academic expectations that are unrealistic,has not won in 40 years and puts a lousy product on the ice? Good luck with that mess. A good high school game is far more entertaining and cheaper.

Coach Russell isn't going anywhere. It would take close to $ 200,000 to buy out the last year of his contract along with the last year of Asst Coach Mikesch's contract. The MTU brass will not do this unless some rich alum comes up with the money to do it. More likely Russell stays and they hope MTU gets better next year. It would be hard to believe they could do worse. If things don't go well in the first half of the season next year then you may see a firing and let Mikesch take the team for the rest of the year. I don't feel Maroste is the man. Michigan Tech needs a recruiting genius. Can they get one I don't know by they have to try that route. I would look to some smaller schools that have had some recent success similar to MTU. Like Merrimack, RPI and Union. Russell recruiting is just not good enough and because of the lack of talent they play the crap out of their few good players and they usually end up hurt. Hire Maroste now??? How much contact has he had with the game while running the golf course? How many players has he scouted? How strong is his recruiting network? Mo is a good hockey man. However, right now you could bring in Scotty Bowman and Mike Babcock and have trouble winning in double digits consistentlyat Tech. Only Fairbanks and Anchorage are more remote college hockey outposts. The academics are difficult. And the social opportunities are limited, even when compared to Marquette, Duluth, Bemidji or St. Cloud. You first must fix what the coaches have no control over, before making the change. Or the next guy won't do much better. It's been the same almost since MacInnes retired.

The football team is now supported entirely by alumni donations. It makes no sense to cut that program when it's not costing the athletic department anything in the first place.

Russell's recruiting has been OK. The biggest problem for three years now is that they can't keep a healthy roster, and so far he and his staff have had no answer to the problem. Now they're imbued in a losing culture, and the AD has no choice but to make a change.

OK...not a yooper don't know much about hockey...BUT...as with any sport, you gotta recruit! I'm from a southern football state where the good players can't spell 'cat'...but they win Heismans and go pro in their sophomore year...just sayin'...maybe Tech ought to make it easier for the better athletes to play there.

At least the football alums aren't embarrassed to wear the black & gold and support the program - with pride I might add...not with their faces buried in their hands like the hockey boys. There wouldn't even be a football program if that group didn't step up the plate a few years back. Go Football Huskies!! You Rock!

The below post should read, "... attendance is higher than Tech hockey games."

Dropping Tech football is ridiculous. They've been doing pretty darn good the past few seasons, and attendance is higher than Tech games. I'm going to be going to this weekend's games, but only because there's nothing else to do on the weekend ... and this might be the only chance to see a victory the rest of the season. It's getting out of hand, they're not even close to being competitive ... thank goodness for the basketball teams (on a side note, what a turnaround for the men's team!).

How would getting rid of the football team help the hockey team? The football team has actually been fairly consistent over the past couple years, and their fan base is to good to cut the program. The history of the football program and the interest from the fans is enough of a reason to keep it.

Perhaps they should get rid of their football team(This comment is usually followed by, "Tech has a football team?") and focus more on hockey team. There is no need for a football team here. Spend a little extra money to make people come to the games - we sure know Tech collects enough in tuition to afford the Detroit Red Wings to play for their college.

Maroste?! That's where the Athletic Dept. screwed up in the first place. Should've hired him 7 years ago when they had the chance. Why would he even consider walking into that mess after they shooed him out the door? And I highly doubt it's money saving that keeps them from firing. They've already lost a ton of it on attendance. I just think they don't have a clue what to do!
