CC Miners find groove, beat Pat’s Foods 11-3

WOLVERINE – The young Copper Country Miners have started hitting the baseball, and that could be bad news for opponents in the upcoming Twilight League playoffs.

The first-year team ended the regular season with an 11-3 win over Pat’s Foods-Mosquito Inn Tuesday at the Wolverine Ball Diamond.

“I think the kids are picking it up,” CCM manager Jim Cortright said. “We hit the ball really well tonight.”

CCM fell behind by a 2-0 margin in the top of the first inning, but they responded quickly by chasing six runs across in the bottom of the inning.

Two hit batsmen, a walk and singles by Bryce Turner and Carson Turner got the big inning going.

A double by Reid Pietila and three-run triple by Sam Keskimaki did the rest of the damage in the big inning.

“We had a nice answer in the first inning,” CCM coach Paul Keskimaki said. “We hit the ball hard in our last game … And we hit it hard in this game.”

Winning pitcher Reid Pietila went the first three innings, with Travis Pietila going the rest of the way.

Miners’ third baseman Bryce Turner helped out his pitchers by starting three double plays.

“He (Turner) has a great arm and he made those throws from third base look pretty easy,” Cortright said.

Reid Pietila led the winning assault on losing chucker Ross Kinnunen with three hits. Carson Turner and Bryce Turner picked up two raps each.

Finishing with a 5-11 record, CCM will host Dean Kangas-State Farm in the play-in game Thursday. The game is set for 6:30 p.m., in Hancock, the winner advancing to a semi-final playoff game.
