Houghton and South Range win in softball

TAPIOLA – Houghton and South Range racked up wins in Over 50 Softball League play Thursday.

Houghton scored eight runs in the top of the seventh to take a 14-7 win over Chassell.

Winning pitcher Steven Dunstan went 4-for-4 at the plate, collecting two triples. Tom Merz had three hits for the winners.

Kevin Tormala, Tom LeGault, Jim Perrin and Dick Franti all had two raps. Brien Ricci counted three hits for Chassell, while Pat Duguay, Nick Lindemann and Andy Heikkinen were good for two raps. Mitch Lake was the losing hurler.

In the other game, South Range walloped Tapiola by a 24-2 count.

Winning pitcher Dave Kaiponen had four hits, including a homer over the fence. Jed Pollard also laced four hits and Stan Murtomaki rapped out three more.

Tapiola received two hits from Den Salbashian. Lenny Juntunen was the losing pitcher.
