Minors All-Stars rally comes up short

MIDLAND – Portage Lake rallied from a 7-1 deficit after four innings with two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth, but Grosse Pointe Farms City retired the final PL hitter with the tying run at third for a 7-6 victory.

PL jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single by Levi Frahm. GPFC answered with two in the bottom of the first, two in the second and three more in the third for a 7-1 advantage.

The Houghton County team turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the fourth. It would score twice in the fifth to pull within 7-3. After another double play to end the fifth, the PL bats went to work again in the sixth. Cody Turner drew a leadoff walk before a pop out to the pitcher for the first out. Zachary Geborkoff and Ian Nordstrom legged out infield singles, scoring Turner. Frahm cleared the bases with a double to pull his team within 7-6. He advanced to third on a ground out to first base, but was stranded there to end the game.

“I’m really proud of the team and the way we battled back,” said PL Manager Wes Frahm. “The double plays really turned the momentum for us. It’s disappointing we could squeeze across another run, but we’ll have confidence going into tomorrow.”

Portage Lake faces Southwest Jackson in the second of three pool play games tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.
