Portage Lake Minors start tourney 2-0

MARQUETTE – The Portage Lake Little League Minor All-Stars won twice this past weekend in Marquette, setting the table for a Tuesday night matchup against either Marquette or Ishpeming.

On Saturday, the Minors defeated Penokee Range, a team comprised of players from Ironwood and Bessemer. They scored nine runs in the first inning and held on for a 16-10 win.

“Our defense was just average, but our pitching was good,” said head coach Wes Frahm when asked about his team’s performance.

Levi Frahm and Bryce Pugh led the way offensively for the winners with three hits each in the win.

On Sunday, Portage Lake shut down Negaunee, 12-0.

Levi Frahm and Kyle Primeau combined for a no-hitter on the mound with Frahm pitching three strong innings before Primeau closed the game strong.

Each of the top five hitters had two hits apiece. Cooper Baril came up with a key single early on, knocking in two runs on the play.
