Finlandia volleyball tops Northland

HANCOCK Sophomores Marina Dalton and Natalia Vazquez had double-digits in kills as the Finlandia University volleyball team (4-11) won their home opener, 3-1 (25-18, 25-13, 18-25, 25-15) over Northland College (2-11), Wednesday night at the Paavo Nurmi Center.

In the opening set, Northland College scored the first six points of the set. Finlandia University turned on the afterburners with a 15-3 run. That made it 15-9 and the Lions were not challenged after that.

In the second set, Finlandia came out like a world class sprinter, jumping to a 6-1 lead. The Lumberjills battled back and forced an error. That cut the gap to 9-7 before the Lions reeled off a 7-1 burst to effectively end the set.

In the third set, the two teams battled on even teams for the first half. Senior Katelyn Anderson dropped in an ace to tie it at 13-13. Northland College scored six straight points to turn back Finlandia.

In the fourth set, Dalton found the back corner to tie it up at 10-10. Sophomore Shannon Anderson stepped up and served 11 straight points to effectively end the match.

For Finlandia, Vazquez had 12 kills and 11 digs while Dalton had 12 kills, four aces and hit .276. Sophomore Jessie Diaz had 30 digs and K. Anderson finished with 14 digs.

For Northland College, Camille Eastburn had 15 kills and 10 digs AND Jasmine Gomez collected 25 digs.
