Lions drop heartbreaker on the road
ASHLAND, Wis. – The Finlandia University men’s soccer team (0-1) suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 loss in overtime to Rockford (2-0), Friday evening at Ponzio Stadium.
Finlandia got on the board first. Sophomore Glodie Kangia threaded a perfect pass to sophomore Chris Johnson. Johnson fired it home to make it 1-0. At the 54:40 mark, sophomore Jonathan Barnes beat the keeper to the far right post.
Rockford finally appeared on the board at the 81:03 mark via a penalty shot. With 33 seconds left in the game, Anders Wermuth found the back of the net. With 44 seconds left in the first overtime, Wermuth got the game-winner.
The Lions had 17 shots with nine on goal, one corner kick and was called for 13 fouls. Sophomore Matthew Van Horn (0-1) recorded nine saves.
The Regents had 21 shots with 12 on goal, one corner kick and was called for 11 fouls.
Finlandia remains on the road, Sept. 3, taking on Northland College. The game is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m. CST.
