Baraga loses 69-6 to Rapid River

RAPID RIVER – Mason Berglund threw for three touchdowns and ran for three Friday night as the Rapid River Rockets celebrated homecoming with a 69-6 triumph over the Baraga Vikings.

All of Berglund’s scoring passes went to Logan Hardwick, covering 65 and 16 yards in the first quarter and 41 early in the second for a 22-0 cushion in this Western Eight Conference outing.

Berglund then dashed for 45, 38 and 51-yard TDs later in the second for a 53-6 advantage.

“I thought we started a little slow defensively,” said Rockets’ coach Steve Ostrenga. “In the middle of the first quarter, they had a little bit of a drive. Then our seniors really showed their leadership.

“They also had a good kickoff return to our 43-yard line and we had some nice punt returns. We had good pressure on their punter. It was good to see our special teams play well.”

Jarrett LaCasse added a 50-yard TD run in the second stanza. David Johnson scored from 45 yards and Daren Landis had a one-yard TD run.

The Rockets (5-1 overall, 4-1 league) rushed for 384 yards and Berglund was 7-of-9 passing for 147. Hardwick’s TD receptions covered 122.

“I thought we moved the ball pretty well,” said Ostrenga. “Kurt Almonroeder (assistant coach) again called a good offensive game.”

Joey Francois scored on a 15-yard run for Baraga (1-5 overall and league).

“Give them credit,” said Ostrenga. “They brought 11 guys and they played hard. They did some nice things. I thought their quarterback (Dominic Ripley) did a nice job.”

The Rockets travel to Stephenson Friday.
