Chassell, Jeffers each earn road wins

BESSEMER In their Copper Mountain Conference season opener, the Bessemer Speedboys fell to Jeffers 53-39 in the House of Noise on Monday night.

Jaden Wood led the Jets with 17 points, and Carson Turner added 15 for the winners.

“Jeffers was active and athletic,” Speedboy coach Richard Matrella said. “It was our first game and we obviously missed a lot of lay-ups and short shots.

The key was we never ran the offense. We didn’t have much movement and there was no flow. We relied on chaos to score and that’s what we wound up with.”

Matrella said Bessemer was out-scored by seven points in two quarters, totaling 14 points.

“The second quarter just killed us,” said Matrella.

Matrella said Samardich played well and Zielinski did too, especially in the second half.

Up next, Jeffers hosts Dollar Bay in a conference showdown on Thursday.

WATERSMEET — The Chassell Panthers defeated the Watersmeet Nimrods 62-45 in its season opener Monday night.

“Very sloppy early in the game. I would say that Chassell was able to respond better than Watersmeet,” Watersmeet coach George Peterson III said. “Turnovers just killed us tonight.”

Watersmeet missed 18 layups and were outrebounded with Chassell’s height advantage.

“If we miss 18 layups, it’s going to be tough to win,” Peterson said.

Rondell McKinney led the Nimrods with 23 points. Ethan McGeshick scored 12.

Watersmeet goes to Lake Linden-Hubbell Thursday. Chassell heads to Baraga on the same day.
