Girls roundup: Hancock rains down 3s on LL-H

LAKE LINDEN — D’Andra Kero scored 17 points and Maija Sebbas added 12 to lead the Hancock Bulldogs past the Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes, 50-37, Thursday in a nonconference game in Lake Linden.

“Once again, our shooting, or lack thereof, killed us. Most of our shots are high-percentage paint shots,” LL-H head coach Maureen Schick said. “We could collect money from a can drive and still not have enough to buy a basket.”

LL-H was just 12 of 46 (26 percent) from the field while Hancock shot 17 of 36 (47 percent). Hancock converted 8 of 16 attempts from 3, with Sebbas knocking down four and Kero converting three from 3-point range.

“Unfortunately for us they were hot from the 3-point area,” Schick said.

“I’m really disappointed because my girls do many things right, but unless you score points, you’re not going to stay in too many games.”

Alexa Destrampe led the Lakes with 19 points.

Next, LL-H (3-10) hosts Chassell on Thursday; Hancock (6-5) goes to Calumet on Tuesday.

WATERSMEET — Chassell ran away from Watersmeet in the second half for a 77-39 non-conference victory Thursday night.

The Nimrods stayed within striking distance in the first half — it was 29-18 Chassell at halftime after a Panther run to end the half. Chassell dominated the second half.

“This is the most heart I’ve ever seen our girls play with,” Watersmeet coach Brent Besonen said. “We dove after the balls. We got two hands on the ball off the boards. Elissya (Haapala) and Rebecca (Caron) did a great job defensively for us. They had a ton of tipped balls and rebounds. Bethany (Baldwin) with 34, including 10 at the end of the fourth on a very tender leg after hitting the floor hard. She had a monster of a game.”

The Chassell press and depth wore down Watersmeet.

Milly Allen and Sydney Danison scored 22 points to lead Chassell (9-3).

Watersmeet (1-9, 1-7) goes to Ontonagon Thursday.

Chassell 11 18 22 26 — 77

ONTONAGON — Ontonagon won an up-and-down game 51-38 Thursday night over Wakefield-Marenisco in Copper Mountain Conference girls basketball.

The Cardinals jumped out to a first-quarter lead, running the floor well and pressing effectively. But Ontonagon came back within a point entering the second quarter, 12-11. The Gladiators outscored W-M 16-8 in the second quarter for a 27-20 halftime lead.

W-M came back strong in the third quarter and pulled within 35-33. But Ontonagon flipped the script again and pulled away in the fourth quarter.

It was a game of runs.

“It really was a strange contest that way,” Ontonagon coach Dick Franti said. “I guess we were lucky we had the last run.”

Fahren Klopack led Ontonagon with 12 points. Holly Wardynski and Isabelle Lutz both had 10.

“For us, having three girls in double figures helped,” Franti said. “We certainly didn’t shoot a very good percentage. But getting the points helped and a lot of kids in the scoring column.”

Darienne Korpi led W-M with 15 points.

“I thought Korpi and (Rachel) Obradovich both were tough,” Franti said.

Ontonagon (5-7, 4-3) goes to Republic-Michigamme Monday night. W-M (4-9, 4-5) hosts Bessemer Monday.

L’ANSE — The Baraga Vikings girls basketball team haven’t quite found the defensive effort that head coach Keith Willis wants yet this season, but Thursday night, they moved closer to that goal when they held the host L’Anse Purple Hornets to just 27 points en route to a 39-27 nonconference victory in L’Anse.

“It was a defensive game,” said Purple Hornets coach Scott Lloyd. “The better defensive team won the battle.”

The Purple Hornets (5-6) used balanced scoring from their roster, but no one managed to get to double figures.

For the Vikings (10-2), Casey Mleko led the way with 12 points. Carsyn Osterman added 11.

L’Anse goes to Houghton on Tuesday, while Baraga hosts Chassell on the same day.
