Boys roundup: E-TC, L’Anse victorious

WATERSMEET — A halftime challenge from Ewen-Trout Creek head coach Brad Besonen resonated with his players, and E-TC earned a 71-51 Copper Mountain Conference win over the Watersmeet Nimrods Thursday in Watersmeet.

Jake Witt led E-TC with 34 points, 22 rebounds and seven blocks; he shot 12 of 13 from the field and was 2 of 4 from 3-point range. Austin Berglund also recorded a double-double for E-TC, finishing with 22 points and 12 rebounds.

“Jake was outstanding the whole night through,” Besonen said. “Austin did an excellent job getting the ball to the basket, especially in the second half.”

E-TC (4-3, 4-0) trailed 31-25 at half before outscoring Watersmeet 21-6 in the third to take control of the game.

“They just outplayed us and outmuscled us in the first half. They played an aggressive zone in the first half and got deflections and steals,” Besonen said of Watersmeet (1-4, 1-4). “Kind of challenged the kids to man up and take the fight at them. In the second half, we were more aggressive and had a great third quarter.”
