Calumet’s defense stifles Ontonagon in 58-20 win

ONTONAGON Calumet ran away from Ontonagon with a big second quarter and the Copper Kings won 58-20 Tuesday night.

“It was a brutal night on the roads and it was a brutal night in the gym,” Ontonagon coach Dick Franti said.

Calumet (5-3) outscored Ontonagon 21-8 in the second quarter to lead 34-12 at halftime.

“Actually we were competitive in that first half, but we just could not score,” Franti said. “So the second half of the second quarter, they pulled away. They relaxed and started hitting shots and getting it inside to (Hailey) Wickstrom. The fouls mounted and Isabelle (Lutz) had to sit. That hurt us ballhandling wise.”

Wickstrom led Calumet with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

“They certainly have great size,” Franti said. “And they pressure the ball well. We struggled with their pressure tonight, which was unfortunate because I think we handle that and it certainly would have been more of a game. But we didn’t and you have to give them credit.”

Holly Wardynski led Ontonagon with six points.

Ontonagon (3-4) goes to Ewen-Trout Creek Friday night.

“We’re in a stretch of tough ballgames right now, we better be prepared,” Franti said.

Calumet heads to Houghton on Tuesday.
