BARAGA The Baraga Vikings, fresh off a No. 2 ranking in the latest U.P. Class D poll, took care of business at home in a 68-23 victory over the Republic-Michigamme Hawks Tuesday night at Baraga Gym.

Head coach Keith Willis stressed that his Vikings (8-1 overall) still need work on the fundamentals despite their eight-game winning streak.

“We’ve still got to play better on defense,” said Willis. “We need to rebound better. We need to pass better.”

Casey Mleko had a big night for the Vikings with a game-high 20 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double. Willis was extremely pleased to see Mleko have a bounce-back game.

“She had been kind of spinning her tires a little bit the last couple of games,” said Willis. “Hopefully we have her back on track.”

Coming off the bench, Megan Kinnunen had five 3-pointers for 15 points on the night as Baraga had contributions from all seven players who dressed. For Kinnunen, confidence in her shot is something Willis has been hoping to see with more consistency.

“We have been kind of waiting for her to get on track for two years,” said Willis. “It doesn’t surprise me when she shoots like that, but she just needs to get a little more confidence in herself. Maybe this could be the game she did.”

Next up for Baraga will be the Jeffers Jets on Friday.
