Houghton, Baraga girls ranked No. 1 in first poll

The first UPSSA Basketball poll was released on Monday, and the Copper Country was well represented.

The Houghton Gremlins were ranked No. 1 in the Large School Girls Poll, garnering three first-place votes. Houghton was followed by the Norway Knights and Munising Mustangs. Munising is in Class C this year, and they’ve won all seven of their games by an average of 36 points per game. Along with Houghton, Munising had three first-place votes.

Another area team to earn the top spot is the Baraga Vikings. Having won five consecutive games before beating Chassell on Monday, 42-33, Baraga was selected No. 1 for Class D Girls. The Jeffers Jets came in at No. 5.

On the boys side, the only team to earn a ranking was Jeffers, who came in at No. 4 in Class D boys.

And to no one’s surprise, North Central was No. 1 in Class D.

All the records are before Monday’s games.
