HOUGHTON — With an underdog Lake Superior State team hanging around late in the first half Saturday afternoon, Michigan Tech seniors Brenna Heise and Morgan Anderson took over the game.

LSSU was down by only four points at 32-28 with 1 minutes, 36 seconds left in the half when Anderson and Heise came up with five quick points to open things up. A last-second hoop by Lindsey Winter made for a 37-28 halftime lead.

Morgan canned a triple, while Heise assisted on a two-pointer.

“That was a key point in the game,” Tech coach Kim Cameron said after her team’s eventual 73-51 win. “We talked about closing the first half; that gave us the momentum we needed going into the second half.”

The win boosted MTU to an 8-3 in league play (12-4 overall) and put them in good shape for a run at the top of the GLIAC North standings.

Cameron, while noting there’s a lot of season left, liked her team’s showing.

“I thought we had a great day overall,” she said. “The starters did their job, and the people we sent in off the bench also played well. We were able to get everyone in.”

The Lakers never led in the contest, but they stayed close in the opening half behind the inside play of 6-foot-2 center Tamara Novic.

Heise, who tallied 14 of her 18 points in the first half, said the LSSU inside player was tough to contain.

“She’s a good player, she had a good little hook going. Sometimes we had two or three players there, and she still got it off,” the MTU senior said. “We worked on that in practice, but you have to give her credit.”

Tech moved away steadily in the second half as reserve center Bella O’Brien came on to provide some solid minutes.

“Bella came in and helped us get a stop on their post players,” Cameron said. “She came in and did an awesome job.”

With a 56-40 cushion after three quarters that grew to 64-45 early in the final stanza, Cameron was able to get her bench playing time.

Reserve guard Hannah Hobson netted a pair of triples in her brief stay on the floor.

Heise had four rebounds and three assists to go with her team-high 18 points. Anderson was next in line with 17 markers and handed out seven assists, while Kelli Guy dropped in 11 more. Elizabeth Kelliher contributed eight points and blocked two shots

The Lakers, 4-14, 2-9, were led by Novic’s 15 points and eight rebounds. Mackenzie Edwards added 14 points and Rachel Novotny and Valerie Meissner divided 20 evenly.

The Huskies will host Grand Valley Thursday and Ferris State Saturday in league action.

“Those are two big league matchups for us if we want to move up in the standings,” Cameron said.
