Roundup: Calumet boys win 7th in a row; E-TC girls victorious over Wakefield

CALUMET — Another solid defensive effort led to another win for the Calumet Copper Kings. Calumet won its seventh consecutive game with a 50-37 nonconference win over the Ontonagon Gladiators Monday in Calumet.

Wyatt Loukus paced the winners with 12 points. Mitchell Borseth scored 17 to lead Ontonagon (2-4).

“We just have to buy in defensively and compete on that end,” Calumet (7-1) head coach Mike Ojala said. “We’re starting to do that lately. And our group of bigs (Cooper Twardzik, Jesse Helminen, Lenny Torola) loosen things up on the inside for other people.”

Calumet led 22-18 at half before leading by as many as 16 in the third and taking a 38-26 lead into the fourth quarter.

“Ontonagon had us a little bit out of sorts with their changing defenses,” Ojala said. “We saw some triangle and 2, and they kept us off balanced. But we came out in the third and established ourselves, defensively, again. We made Borseth work for what he got and started creating and getting the basketball inside.”

Next, Calumet hosts West Iron County on Thursday, while Ontonagon heads to Wakefield-Marenisco on the same day.
