Boys roundup: Ontonagon wins, Baraga loses

ONTONAGON — Bessemer won its eighth straight game, edging Ontonagon 59-57 in Monday night’s Copper Mountain Conference game.

The Gladiators led by as many as nine points midway through the third quarter, but Bessemer cut it to three going into the fourth, 47-44.

Down four points with under a minute left, Ontonagon was forced to foul. Bessemer missed a couple but was able to keep it a two-possession game until the final second.

Turnovers hurt Ontonagon during Bessemer’s comeback.

“We had some costly ones in the fourth quarter,” Ontonagon coach Andy Borseth said. “We just started getting careless with the ball and Bessemer capitalized with pretty much every turnover we had.”

Mitchell Borseth led Ontonagon with 22 points, James Domitrovich had 14 and Tanner Balcomb finished with 10.

Max Samardich paced Bessemer with 17 points, Keegan Bolen scored 11 and Cade Mazzon had 10.

“It’s a very good matchup,” Borseth said. “They match our size pretty good. They’re going to be a tough out in their district. They’re playing real well together.”

Ontonagon (10-7) goes to Watersmeet tonight.

Bessemer (13-6, 9-4) hosts Ewen-Trout Creek Thursday.
